Engramography: the practice of charting memory through the written word and drawn line

Inspired by the visual language of cartography, Engramographs chart both time and place through the mapping of memory. Nostalgia and homesickness both point to the inextricable ties between time and place when it comes to the construction of our sense of self. Homesickness is not just a longing for a place; it is a longing for a place that was; the moments, people and places that shaped who we were to become.

Engramographs use the imagery and format of cartography to prompt the exploration of memory; using place as a trigger for memory gathering and documentation. Building on the ideas situated in critical cartography, Engramographs ask us how a landscape has shaped us as individuals; what places and times have a personal significance and whether we can use the language of maps to communicate a different kind of landscape. The results are maps which cover the same, repeated physical locations but which are rich with layers of memories, explored through text and image.
